We decided early in our vineyard planning that we would adopt the Old World style of planting. This entails a much higher density per square foot. Our vines rows are spaced seven feet apart and each vine is planted five feet apart. In vineyard lingo, this is called 7 x 5 spacing - pretty simple, huh. This density results in 1200 vines per acre versus the more common 900 vines per acre found in most vineyards with an 8 x 5 and 9 x 5 spacing.
The biggest issue of narrow rows is that EVERYTHING needs to be narrow. Our tractor, sprayers, cultivators and wagons all need to fit in these very tight rows. It add a little complication to buy equipment, but anything is achievable with another time and patience.
